Misha Gipsman: "Open the gate – toll barrier in the contest with asymmetric valuation"

Let us invite you to a Brown Bag Seminar by Misha Gipsman (Ariel University, Israel)
on April 10th, 2024, at 13:00 (CET) in room 402

Presenter: Misha Gipsman

Title: "Open the gate – toll barrier in the contest with asymmetric valuation"

Abstract: "We explore the conflict between a central authority and a rent collector who imposes a toll barrier for passing through his gate. As a historical illustration, this involves merchants who must pay the lord of the crossing for market access. The king, while inclined to eliminate this barrier, may not necessarily succeed in the abolition of the toll. However, the rent collector’s decision to allow more merchants could lead to self-withdrawal. Commercial flows and vassalage are presented as a political dilemma between maximising social welfare and maintaining parity of powers. Removal of barriers such as licence and corruption echoed."

Keywords: Rent-seeking; Toll collector; Barriers
