Týden Akademie věd ČR

Zveme vás na přednášky našich výzkumníků vrámci festivalu Týden Akademie věd ČR.

Program:

15:00 - 15:45 | Digital Media Center | Ing. Martin Srholec, Ph.D.: Does Funding Science and Innovation Actually Work?

Why should governments provide funding for science and innovation? How should this funding be allocated and evaluated? What do we know about the impacts of this funding? Based on the literatures on economics of science and innovation and his own recent research, the lecturer examines not only global insights on the effectiveness of public funding in this area but also showcases best practices of how specific funding instruments have been evaluated and the results thereof.

16:00 - 16:45 | Digital Media Center | Prof. Ing. Štěpán Jurajda, Ph.D., DSc.: Women in Economics

Why are there still so few women in science, particularly in STEM fields? Drawing on insights from labor economics, Štěpán Jurajda will examine the factors shaping the labor-market participation of highly educated women and the changing representation of women in science. The lecture will consider the roles of individual differences, institutions, and social norms, and will review causal evidence on policies aimed at increasing women’s participation in scientific careers.

17:00 - 17:45  | Digital Media Center | Clara Sievert, Ph.D.: A Mental Health Crisis in Academia? Insights from European Economics Departments

Drawing on original survey data from 556 PhD students and 165 faculty members across 14 European economics departments, this talk examines mental health in academia. How prevalent are symptoms of depression and anxiety among economics PhD students? Which students are most strongly affected? What are the main sources of students’ stress? How does faculty compare?

The talk highlights the role of learning environment, adviser relationships, and program structure, while showing that COVID-19 explains only part of the problem. The lecture exposes the hidden costs of a PhD for mental health in economics departments and considers what universities and departments can do to create healthier academic environments.
