Abstract:

This thesis replicates Marin and Vona (2019) and adopts a common framework to examine adjustments to predicted energy-price exposure beyond employment. The sample covers European industrial sectors over 1995–2019. The empirical framework relies on national end-use energy prices, fixed fuel shares, first differences, and controls for structural transformations. The findings show limited aggregate employment adjustment, alongside increases in the shares of technicians and professionals and a decline in the share of manual workers. Labor productivity and real value-added experience short-lived increases, yet the effects weaken over later periods. Aggregate investment shows a delayed negative response, whereas the effects on total investment and its composition do not remain robust when I use revised or extended data. Common-sample comparisons suggest that the weaker productivity results are mainly associated with later years, whereas the investment results are also sensitive to data revisions.
