Investing in Excellence:  Support the CERGE-EI Student Fund

The CERGE-EI Student Support Fund, initiated in 2019, is dedicated to providing additional financial support to CERGE-EI students through Alumni Excellence Fellowships. This support allows students to focus fully on their studies, free from financial strain and helps our programs attract the most promising talent in economics.

Alumni Excellence Fellowships

Thanks to the generous support of CERGE-EI Alumni and the Boards of Nadace CERGE-EI, we awarded 6 alumni excellence fellowships from the Student Support Fund. The fellowships are meant for newly enrolled students who were ranked as the very best by the Admission Committee and remain among the top quarter of the first-year cohort based on their cumulative GPA ranking. It can also be awarded to second-year students who manage to pass the complete first-year general exams with a PhD pass and rank among the top three students of their study cohort.

Jose

Jose is a second-year PhD student, honored with the Alumni Excellence Fellowship this year for ranking among the top three students in his cohort:  "Knowing that a community of alumni supports current students reinforces my commitment to making the most of this opportunity and contributing meaningfully to the CERGE-EI legacy in the future."

Tereza

Tereza is a third year student in PhD in Economics program. She graduated from Charles University’s Faculty of Mathematics and Physics: "Even though I was very determined, my first weeks at CERGE-EI were very tough. So when I learned I was awarded an alumni excellence fellowship, it was a significant push for my self-confidence. I suddenly felt that the CERGE-EI community believed in me.”

Maksim

Maksim continues his PhD in Economics at CERGE-EI in the 4th eyar under the supervision of Stanislav Anatolyev: "My dissertation proposal is a theoretical project about instrumental variables regression under data clustering. We construct a novel estimator robust to many weak instruments and clustering, derive its asymptotic properties, and provide guidelines for inference. Our estimator is applicable in various empirically relevant contexts with dependent data and is superior to existing estimation and inference techniques used in these contexts. Also, as a part of my dissertation writing process, I visited CEMFI (Madrid) for a month-long research stay, presented my work there, and discussed it with distinguished scholars."

Martin Kosik modified

Martin

Martin is a 5th year PhD student, focusing on Development Economics: "My disseration proposal focuses mostly on development economics. My main project studies the optimal targeting of interventions to reduce crop residue burning (practice that is common in parts of south Asia and which have substantial negative health externalities). I received a lot of value feedback on this project during my research stay at Northwestern University."

Who supports us?

“I would like to at least partially return to CERG-EI what I have gained. My education has given me opportunities that have helped me in my professional career. I would like to help someone like me, I also did not have the resources to pay for a prestigious education. If I could help at least one such person, I would be very happy.”

"For me, Alumni Give Back serves two purposes. First, I want to give back to CERGE-EI as a community, because I gained a lot by being part of that. Second, I still remember how difficult it is to be a full-time PhD student and watch your peers starting their first jobs and thinking about whether this journey you took is the right one for you. And I believe that some extra financial support can help the best students to continue on this journey and confirm that they did the right thing by choosing a PhD program,"
