Title: "State Ownership in Enterprises and Party Patronage: An Investigation of State-Owned Enterprises in Poland in the 21st Century"

Abstract:
This study examines the role of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) as instruments of party patronage, focusing on Poland in the 21st century. It conceptualizes political parties as patrons and SOE board members as their clients. Drawing on a newly compiled, comprehensive dataset covering over 20 years of SOE records and electoral candidate data, the analysis demonstrates that turnover in the management and supervisory boards of SOEs is primarily driven by the outcomes of parliamentary elections. Moreover, the extent of politicization within SOE boards has increased markedly since 2015. This growing politicization is further reflected in the expanding role of SOE board members as financial donors to political parties.
