Craig Stapleton served as United States Ambassador to France from 2005 to 2009. He also served as United States Ambassador to the Czech Republic from 2001 until 2004, both nominated by President George W. Bush. In addition to his government service, Ambassador Stapleton has had an extensive business career. Since June 2009, he has been a senior advisor at Stone Point Capital, a private equity firm, and he served as President of Marsh and McLennan Real Estate Advisors of New York from 1982 to 2001. He has been a co-owner of the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team since 2009 and was also co-owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team from 1989–1998. In 2000, he served as Finance Chairman for the George W. Bush for President and in 2004 he served as Connecticut State Chairman for the re-election campaign of President Bush.
Ambassador Stapleton has many civic interests. He is President of the Václav Havel Foundation in the United States. He was awarded the Jan Masaryk Medal for service to the Czech Republic. He served on the Board of the Peace Corps under President George H. W. Bush. He has served on the visiting Committee for Harvard College and the Committee on University Resources. He serves on the September 11 Memorial Foundation in New York, the Board of the George W. Bush Foundation and Library, the de Tocqueville Foundation in Paris and the Mona Bismarck Foundation in Paris. He has been named as Honorary Citizen of the French cities of Deauville, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Vienne.
Ambassador Stapleton is a director of Abercrombie & Fitch Co and Carlisle Bank Corporation. He holds a B.A. from Harvard University and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.
