Award for Best Student Paper Goes to CERGE-EI Researcher

7 October, 2015

We are excited to announce that a paper authored by CERGE-EI PhD student and Junior Researcher, Ján Palguta, has won a prize for the Best Student Paper at the Slovak Economic Association Meeting which was held in Košice on October 2 and 3, 2015.

Scholars from Slovak and international institutions gathered to present their unpublished research in all areas of economics – theoretical, empirical, experimental, institutional, and policy-oriented. The main objective of the meeting is to foster contacts and lasting academic cooperation among domestic and international economists.

Ján presented his paper entitled “Political Rent-Seeking in Public Procurement: Evidence from the Entry of Political Challengers at Electoral Thresholds”. The article shows that the entry of an additional political party to a local municipality strengthens the political accountability of representatives and limits the risks of corruption in public procurements.
