Talking Economics: Urban Economics Uncovered

14 November, 2024

In the latest episode of the Talking Economics podcast, we sit down with CERGE-EI alumnus Lukáš Makovský to explore the field of urban economics.

Lukáš explains how urban economics has transitioned from a largely theoretical discipline to an empirical one, driven by richer data availability. “Starting in the 90s, urban economics has become much more applied,” he says, reflecting on the shift that occurred with the rise of detailed local data. He shares insights on agglomeration economies and how cities' higher productivity levels can attract workers, raising questions about wage dynamics and commuting patterns. “There has to be something that actually motivates people to be in cities…one of the reasons is that cities are more productive,” Lukáš notes, describing how urban environments capitalize on increased productivity and opportunities.

Additionally, he explores topics such as the role of urban planning and zoning regulations, the value of quiet green spaces, and the potential future of urban areas as technology reshapes labor and production demands.

Lukáš, who earned a Ph.D. in Economic Geography from the London School of Economics and Political Science, currently lectures on Urban Economics and Real Estate at Henley Business School, University of Reading. Prior to his Ph.D., he worked as a city planner at the Prague Institute of Planning and Development and as a project manager in Real Estate Advisory.
