CERGE-EI and Prague University of Economics and Business open a new Bachelor's program Economics of Markets and Organizations

18 June, 2025

The National Accreditation Office for Higher Education has granted accreditation to a new bachelor's degree program in Economics of Markets and Organizations, which is being developed in cooperation between the Faculty of Business Administration of the Prague University of Economics and Business and CERGE-EI.

The focus of the program is interdisciplinary, combining economic theory with practical aspects of markets and industries. The program will offer students the best of both institutions and prepare them for a career as businessmen and managers with insight into economics.

The new Bachelor's program responds to current challenges such as increasing market concentration and a changing economic environment. Students will learn to analyse market dynamics, assess competition and design effective strategies for both the public and private sectors. An emphasis on real case studies, quantitative analysis and an interdisciplinary approach ensures the practical applicability of the knowledge gained.

Teaching will take place at both institutions, the Prague University of Economics and Business and CERGE-EI. The curriculum includes courses in statistics and econometrics taught by Daniel Münich (CERGE-EI), strategic analysis will be taught by Ladislav Tyll (the Prague University of Economics and Business), and economics will be introduced to students by Filip Matějka (CERGE-EI) and Marek Kapička (CERGE-EI).

"Our flagship program for almost 35 years has been the PhD in Economics. In recent years, we have added a Master in Economic Research with an emphasis on public policy analysis. Now we look forward to discussing modern concepts of economics with undergraduate students. Students will benefit from being taught by professors who are involved in world-leading research. Moreover, our community is international, with graduates working in more than 40 countries," adds Marek Kapička, Director of CERGE-EI.

According to Jiří Hnilica, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration of the Prague University of Economics and Business, the program is highly relevant mainlybecause of the practical applicability of the acquired knowledge: its graduates will find employment, for example, as market analysts, consultants, economists, researchers or journalists.

"The program combines the best of the specific know-how of Faculty of Business Administration of the Prague University of Economics and Business and CERGE-EI. In the case of CERGE-EI, it is about analytical and theoretical subjects, while the Prague University of Economics and Business will focus on business and management topics," explains Jiří Hnilica.

Admission to the program will open at the end of 2025 with the start of studies in the winter semester of 2026/27. Its students will, like in other bachelor's program from Faculty of Business Administration, complete their studies with so-called bachelor's projects instead of written bachelor's theses.

They can continue their Master's studies in the Management or International Management - CEMS programmes (Prague University of Economics and Business) or the Master in Economic Research (CERGE-EI).
