Professor Gérard Roland Received Award for Long-Term Contribution to the Development of Czech Economic Learning

The winner of this year’s Czech Economic Society prize for long-term contribution to the development of Czech economic learning is Gérard Roland, visiting professor at CERGE-EI since 1999 and member of the Executive and Supervisory Committee of CERGE-EI since 1996.
The prize is awarded by the Czech Economic Society (CES) to outstanding representatives of the Czech economic community for long-term contribution to the development of Czech economic learning. Professor Roland is the tenth winner of this award. This year’s prize was awarded for long-term and versatile support for the development of economics as a science in the Czech Republic.
Professor Gérard Roland is one of the world's most successful economists. He is a leading figure in the so-called economics of transition, which examines the transition from socialism to capitalism. In his research, he has, among other things, developed the theory of the political economy of transition processes and contributed to the understanding of the political constraints of reforms. His research has also addressed the costs and benefits of fast and slow transformations or the optimal timing of transition steps. Professor Roland is one of the world's most cited economists with more than 30,000 citations in Google Scholar and an h-index of 66.
In addition to a number of articles on the economics of transition, Professor Roland is the author of the leading textbook on the subject, Transition and Economics, which is the standard text for Ph.D. students and has been translated into several languages. Professor Roland has been directly involved in the education and research work of Ph.D. students in economics in the Czech Republic for decades.
Gérard Roland was a professor at the Free University of Brussels from 1991 to 2001. Since 2001 he has been Professor of Economics at the University of California Berkeley, where he held the Chair of Economics from 2008-2011. He has taught as a visiting professor at the Université catholique de Louvain, University of California Davis, University College London, University of Michigan Business School and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, among others. He has consulted for the World Bank, the European Commission, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Professor Roland's work has been published in the world's leading economic journals, such as the Review of Economic Studies, American Economic Review, The Quarterly Journal of Economics, and the Journal of Political Economy.
The award was presented to Professor Roland on 30th November 2024 at the Prague University of Economics and Business during the 13th Biennial Conference of the Czech Economic Society. The award was presented by Daniel Němec, President of the CES, and Daniel Münich, coordinator of the CES prize.
