9 July, 2026

CERGE-EI is delighted to share the news that PhD student Maksim Smirnov has won this year’s Best Conference Paper award at the Royal Economic Society Annual Conference 2026.

The conference is the Royal Economic Society’s flagship annual event, bringing together economists from universities, research institutions, and policy organizations to present and discuss new research across the field.

Maksim was recognized for his research developing new statistical methods for testing how the effects of policies differ across people. His work has practical applications for policy evaluation and contributes to a better understanding of heterogeneous policy impacts.

“Maksim has worked consistently and with great focus over the years, and this award is a well-deserved recognition of both his hard work and his clear talent as a researcher. His paper reflects strong methodological thinking as well as the ability to address questions with direct relevance for policy evaluation. I am very proud of his achievement,” said Stanislav Anatolyev, his CERGE-EI supervisor.

We warmly congratulate Maksim on this outstanding achievement and wish him continued success in his research.
