9 October, 2026

On November 5, 2026, CERGE-EI will take part in the Week of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the largest science festival in the Czech Republic, with an afternoon program of three public lectures. The event will take place at CERGE-EI.

The program will open at 3:00 p.m. with Martin Srholec, who will give a lecture titled Does Funding Science and Innovation Actually Work? He will discuss why governments support science and innovation, how such funding can be allocated and evaluated, and what research tells us about its impact.

At 4:00 p.m., Štěpán Jurajda will present Women in Economics. Drawing on research in labor economics, he will examine the factors that shape the participation of highly educated women in the labor market and in science, as well as the role of institutions, social norms, and policies aimed at increasing women’s representation in scientific careers.

The final lecture, beginning at 5:00 p.m., will be given by Clara Sievert. In A Mental Health Crisis in Academia? Insights from European Economics Departments, she will present findings based on survey data from PhD students and faculty across European economics departments. The lecture will explore the prevalence and sources of mental-health difficulties in academia and consider how universities can create healthier research and study environments.

The lectures will be held in the Digital Media Center at CERGE-EI, Politických vězňů 7, Prague 1. Registration is recommended. We sincerely invite you to come.
