Filip Matějka to become President of the European Economic Association in 2029

26 October, 2026

Filip Matějka, Professor of Economics at CERGE-EI, has been elected Vice-President of the European Economic Association (EEA) and will serve as its President in 2029.

The EEA is the main and largest association of economists in Europe. It organizes the annual European Economic Congress, publishes the Journal of the European Economic Association, and supports economic research and young researchers across Europe.

As President, Filip will help set the association's agenda, participate in its leadership, and represent the European economics research community internationally.

Past EEA presidents include several Nobel Prize laureates, such as Jean Tirole, Philippe Aghion, and Christopher Pissarides, as well as many other pioneers and leading figures in modern economics.

Commenting on his new role, Filip Matějka says:
"I see this as an opportunity to help European economics better address the challenges of today, from AI to a rapidly changing world more broadly. I would also love to see more young economists from Central Europe become part of the international research community.

And already next August, the EEA's annual congress will take place in Prague, bringing more than a thousand leading economists to the city. This is wonderful news in itself, and the event will be organized by a great team at the Prague University of Economics and Business (VŠE)."

Congratulations, Filip!
